Fire-fighters on Sunday morning quickly put out a grass fire near Swieqi believed to have been started by a fault in overhead power cables.

The fire started at about 10.35am and spread quickly.

People on the scene spoke of sparks and the sound of explosions from the cables and discounted Facebook reports of an 'explosion' in an electricity sub-station.

Some households reported a brief power outage.
