Powerful, thought-provoking passion play that reassesses Judas

Intriguing theatrical experience unfolds in Ktajjen at St Dominic Hall, Valletta

Kumpanija Teatrali Dumnikani Beltin will be presenting Ktajjen, a powerful and thought-provoking Passion play that dares to place one of history’s most controversial figures at its very centre: Judas Iscariot.

Traditionally remembered simply as the man who betrayed Jesus, Judas is re-examined in Ktajjen through a deeper, more human lens. The play invites audiences to look beyond the single act that defined him and instead explore the inner struggles, doubts, ambitions and pressures that may have shaped his choices. Through this perspective, Judas emerges not only as a traitor, but as a complex man wrestling with faith, loyalty and destiny.

The production weaves together well-known episodes from the Bible with imaginative and symbolic scenes created specifically for this play. These fantasy situations add emotional depth and dramatic tension, allowing the audience to enter Judas’ mind and question the motives behind his actions. Was he driven by greed, disillusionment and fear, or by a belief that his actions served a greater purpose?

The script is written by Etienne Micallef, a name synonymous with Passion plays that challenge convention. Renowned for giving familiar biblical stories an unexpected twist, Micallef once again pushes boundaries, encouraging reflection rather than offering easy answers. By the end of Ktajjen, audiences are left with a compelling question: was Judas truly a villain of history, or an unwilling hero in a divine plan?

Ktajjen is directed by Frank Micallef, whose vision brings together strong performances, symbolic staging and emotional depth to create a compelling theatrical experience. With its bold storytelling, emotional performances and challenging themes, the play promises to be a memorable and unsettling theatrical experience for all who attend.

Ktajjen will be performed at St Dominic Hall, lower Merchants Street, Valletta on March 28 and 30, and April 1, at 7.30pm, and on Good Friday, April 3, at 9.30am.
