The Theatre Studies division within the Mediterranean Institute at the University of Malta is holding a three-day workshop on actor training between Monday and Wednesday. The workshop will be conducted by Italian actor and director Domenico Castaldo.

Musicalised Dramaturgies is a workshop structure designed around an ongoing research project conducted by Mario Frendo (currently academic coordinator of Theatre Studies at the University of Malta) in collaboration with Mr Castaldo.

The research looks at the possibilities of musicalisation as process for the construction of theatrical performance, and musicalised activity undertaken by the actors within a post-dramatic context.

The interdisciplinary workshop presented here focuses particularly on how musicality in theatrical performance is embodied by the performer rather than only serving as sonorous background to action.

Mr Castaldo worked on various projects intended to serve as training processes for actors but also as platforms for encounter with audiences in performance. His latest project Katharsis was performed in Malta in 2010 as part of the Malta Arts Festival.

Mr Castaldo is currently working on a new performance structure entitled Welcoming The End of the World! He is the artistic director of The Garden, a stage programme intended for professional actors, newcomers to the world of theatre, and any individuals interested to experience theatrical activity through practice.

The workshop sessions will be held at the MITP Theatre in St Christopher Street, Valletta on Monday between 9 and 10 a.m., Tuesday between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Wednesday between 5 and 8 p.m.

Participation for the workshop is free of charge.
