Works by celebrated Pre-Raphaelite artist Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones are among a haul of valuable items sold for more than €2.8 million at auction.
Pieces taken from a collection inherited by broadcaster Bamber Gascoigne, including three studies for Burne-Jones's The Wheel Of Fortune - painted for ex-prime minister Arthur Balfour - went under the hammer.
The three studies for Burne-Jones's Wheel Of Fortune went for double the pre-sale estimate, selling for €96,280. They were expected to sell for between €28,000 to €42,000.
It was modelled by 19th century actress Lillie Langtry, who was once considered one of the most beautiful women in London, and is one of Burne-Jones's most famous works.
A remarkable €3,474,000 was raised from last night's auction, hosted by Sotheby's, which was higher than even the most generous pre-sale estimates - which ranged from €1.8 to €2.5 million.
The paintings were recently discovered at West Horsley Place, the estate of Mary, Duchess of Roxburghe, along with one of the most famous paintings from the Victorian era - Flaming June, by Frederic Leighton.
Sir Thomas Lawrence's 18th century work, Satan As The Fallen Angel, was the most expensive piece to be sold at €171,500, roughly €140,000 more than estimated.
Other works sold include a painting of the duchess's mother, Peggy Primrose, by Glyn Philpot, which was bought for €78,736.
Sales continue today.
