U.K. nutritionist John Wells is to address two seminars this week to discuss prebiotics and babies' natural defence.

The seminars, organised by Nutricia and Milupa (Numico) local agents Pemix Limited, are intended for doctors, pharmacists, midwives and nurses.

Other speakers at the seminars, to be chaired by the director of Paediatrics, Dr Simon Attard Montalto, include Royal Numico regional director Dimitris Thomopoulos and Pemix medical field manager Maria Gatt.

Mr Wells has been responsible for organising and monitoring clinical trials and various research projects for the UK babycare market. In 1995 he was invited to join an expert committee, set up by the UK Department of Health to advise the government on the nutritional assessment of infant formulas.

The recommendations of this committee have since been published as a formal report. More recently, Mr Wells' time has been devoted to the study of the inclusion of prebiotics in infant nutrition and their support in the natural defences of infants.

After an extensive ten-year research and development programme, Numico has added prebiotics to their ranges of various infant milk formulas. This gives them a highly competitive edge in their field. Only breast milk is better.

Entrance is only by invitation.
