President Eddie Fenech Adami is resting after he underwent a medical procedure to his heart on Sunday, hospital sources said.
Sources confirmed that Dr Fenech Adami, 74, underwent the intervention during which a stent, a small device, was permanently placed in an artery to keep it open.
The President's Office said Dr Fenech Adami's appointments and commitments for this week were either cancelled or postponed because he was "indisposed" but stopped short of saying why. When contacted, a spokesman would only say that Dr Fenech Adami needed rest after a very busy month.
Last June, Dr Fenech Adami underwent an angiogram after a scan the day before revealed possible cardiac ischaemia, meaning not enough blood and oxygen were flowing into the heart. The President had the scan following chest discomfort.
Back in 1997, Dr Fenech Adami had suffered a transient ischaemic attack and had undergone a triple bypass in March 1999.
