More than 1,000 priests from 280 dioceses, spread over 80 countries, will be in Malta in the coming days for the international congress of priests which opens on Monday.

Around 300 priests from Malta and Gozo will be taking part in the congress, which will discuss the role of priests in bringing society close to the Church.

The congress opens on Monday evening with a celebration at St John's Co-Cathedral, presided over by Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos, prefect of the congregation of clergy.

The meetings start on Tuesday at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, in Valletta and a full day's session will also be held in Gozo.
