Prison laptop inquiry report due 'in the coming days' - Home Affairs Minister
Glenn Bedingfield says decisions will be taken after reviewing recommendations
An internal inquiry into the illegal use of an internet-connected laptop by a convicted murderer inside prison will be concluded "in the coming days", the Home Affairs Minister said on Sunday.
Speaking on the current affairs and newspaper review programme Paper Scan on ONE TV, Glenn Bedingfield said he expects to receive the report of the internal inquiry “in the coming days”.
He added he will “take whatever decisions are necessary” once he has reviewed the recommendations.
The minister had appointed the internal inquiry last month after prison officials discovered a laptop connected to the internet in a prison cell.
Multiple sources had confirmed with Times of Malta that the laptop was seized from the cell of Adrian Agius, one of the Tal-Maksar gang, who was jailed for life for the murder of lawyer Carmel Chircop.
Bedingfield had confirmed that a prisoner, whom he never named, was found using a laptop “irregularly” in his prison cell, pointing out the prisoner did not bring the laptop into the prison clandestinely but was granted authorisation to use it in May 2024, on condition that it is not connected to the internet.
However the prison officials discovered the laptop was in fact connected to the internet.
On Sunday Bedingfield once again praised prison officials for their actions in making the discovery and confiscating the device.
Prison authorities are separately investigating the matter.
