Prison should be a place where people can rehabilitate with dignity: Alex Borg

Alex Borg said on Thursday that the Corradino Correctional Facility should be a place where people can rehabilitate themselves with dignity.

During a visit to the CCF, the PN leader said it was also important that justice be served to the victims.

At CCF, Borg met officials and staff, including medics and members of the Correctional Services Agency.

He was welcomed by director Chris Siegersma and chief operations officer Colonel Etienne Scicluna. During the visit, the PN Leader was told about the challenges faced daily by both residents and officers, as well as the importance of ensuring that the correctional sector is run with seriousness and a humane approach, in an environment where individuals can reform and avoid reoffending.

Borg visited, among others, the facility's clinic, chapel and learning hub. He was also shown a number of different divisions selected by the facility’s leadership and visited the prison bakery before holding a private meeting with CCF's management.

Accompanied by MPs Darren Carabott and Ivan Bartolo, Borg stressed that residents must understand that their actions were wrong and that there are consequences for poor decisions.

At the same time, it must always be kept in mind that within entities such as the CCF, individuals can reform and be provided with the environment, support and tools necessary to ensure they do not reoffend and create further victims, he added.
