Court told the altercation cause 'significant commotion' in the street
A 37-year-old man has been placed under a three-year probation order after admitting to assaulting his mother during a family argument at a residence in Birżebbuga.
The court heard that police officers were called to the property in Triq l-Għannejja on June 24 following reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers established that an argument had broken out between the accused and his family members who reside in the flat below him.
The accused allegedly attacked his mother, causing her minor injuries. The accused's sister and her partner were also present at the scene. According to the prosecution, the altercation caused a significant commotion out in the street.
During police interrogation, the man cooperated fully with the authorities, admitted to his actions, and expressed genuine remorse for his behaviour, a detail later confirmed in court by the inspector.
Sources speaking to Times of Malta revealed that the argument originally erupted over a water tank. It was also noted that the man suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Magistrate Anne Marie Thake placed the man under a three-year probation order and issued a restraining order against him to ensure the protection of the victim.
The name of the accused cannot be published due to a court order.
Inspector Omar Zammit led the prosecution while lawyer Amadeus Cachia represented the accused.
