The newly appointed Cardinal Angelo Scola and President Guido de Marco discussed the possibility of convening leaders of Catholic and Eastern Christian Churches as well as other religious leaders, at a conference in Malta.

Prof. de Marco arrived back in Malta yesterday, after delivering the opening and closing address of the conference entitled Il Codice Penale di Malta (1854) organised by La Casa Editrice Dott. Antonio Milani (CEDAM), as part of its centenary celebrations, and the Istituto Veneto.

The President presided a meeting of experts in criminal law, who examined the Maltese criminal code of 1854, which represents the first exercise in common law influencing a Napoleonic code.

A number of jurists, including Albert Ganado from Malta, took part in different panels, examining aspects of this code, and its relevance as a pace-setter of European cooperation.

During his short visit to Venice to take part at this conference, the President was received by the Prefetto of Veneto, the Mayor of Venice, the vice-president of the region, as well as the Patriarch of Venice, Mgr Scola.

The call on Mgr Scola took place on Friday afternoon. On Sunday, Pope John Paul II announced that Mgr Scola was to be made Cardinal, together with 30 others from different parts of the world.

President de Marco met the Patriarch of Venice, Mgr Angelo Scola, shortly before the Pope announced that Mgr Scola was to be made cardinal.
