Nature Trust (Malta) yesterday called upon the authorities to appoint a steering committee for the proper management of Buskett Gardens, as has been done for other ecologically important sites, such as Comino and the sand dune at White Tower bay.

"NT believes that the popular recreational site is in dire need of urgent restoration works, such as the repair of crumbling rubble walls to allay the high rate of soil erosion visible all around the gardens, and a proper wardening system to prevent common infringements, such as vandalism to trees and dumping. The recent heavy rains have only served to accentuate the soil erosion problem at Buskett," it said in a statement.

NT said the so-called management of the gardens by the Agriculture Department did not address all the ecological problems of the site.
