Following his shock retirement from the Malta Olympic Committee (MOC) a few days after the 2003 GSSE, informed sources yesterday told The Times that former Director of Sport Pippo Psaila will seek a comeback by contesting the next elections in November.
Psaila will again submit his nomination for the post of Director of Sport who is responsible for the technical preparation of athletes ahead of international competitions which fall under the helm of the MOC, namely, the GSSE, Mediterranean, Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
Psaila held the post for ten years after being elected to the Executive Board in 1994. Following a poor showing in the 1995 GSSE in Luxembourg, Malta registered the best ever four results at the Games culminating in a record 44 medals in the last edition in Malta.
He decided to retire in June 2003 citing various reasons behind his decision, the main one, perhaps, being the new Sports Law which according to him had left the MOC with less autonomy.
The MOC Executive Board was elected in 2000. A number of officials, besides Psaila, left during the course of their tenure.
Vice-president Bertie Muscat, Director of Publications Charles Camenzuli, Director of Media Pierre Cassar and Director of Relations with Governmental Departments Clarence Busuttil were the others to step down.
