Public consultation opened on national agriculture policy

The consultation will run for seven weeks

The government’s proposed policy for developing the agriculture sector over 10 years has been opened to public consultation.

In a statement Friday, the Agriculture Ministry said the white paper on its National Agricultural Policy for Malta, covering 2027–2037, had been opened to public scrutiny.

The document presents a list of reforms aimed at strengthening the sector, including addressing the limitations and fragmentation of agricultural land, generational continuity among farming communities and greater sustainability.

Protection of agricultural land, the professionalism of the sector, climate, water and energy resilience, a stronger focus on market orientation and effective and efficient administration are among the main strategic areas covered by the policy, the ministry said.

The public consultation will remain open for seven weeks.

Agriculture Minister Anton Refalo emphasised that agriculture was not just an economic sector, but a part of the nation’s identity and culture, while stressing the need to protect agricultural land.

He also discussed the importance of attracting young people to the sector to ensure its long-term viability.

Refalo also opened a seminar on tools and regulations geared at protecting agricultural land, a meeting which saw attendance of representatives from five EU member states.
