At the end of December, Malta's public service was made up of 26,435 full-time employees, 498 part-times and 698 on contract.

The information was given in Parliament by the Prime Minister when answering a question by Silvio Parnis (PL). The number of employees at ministers' private secretariats - 273 - cost the Exchequer €5,656,249 during 2009.

Independent statutory corporations employed 10,471 employees as at the end of July while companies where the government had a majority shareholding employed 2,270.
