Illegal waste dumped on Malta's roads continues to tarnish the country's reputation at the peak of the tourist season.
The picture, taken in Marsa yesterday morning, shows rubbish left by the wayside on December 13 Road, close to the pelican lights.
Though December 13 is a major arterial road through which thousands of cars pass every day, it was not a member of the public who reported the illegal dumping but an official from the Resources and Infrastructure Ministry.
Melvyn Mangion, the ministry's communications coordinator, said it was irresponsible individuals who illegally dumped rubbish and bulky refuse in public places that were tarnishing Malta's reputation.
He complained that such matters were not being reported to the authorities.
The rubbish would be removed within half an hour of the report being received, he said.
"People who see any illegally dumped or bulky waste, damage to public conveniences and any waste in public areas should call on the Public Cleansing Department free phone 8007 2239. We really need the cooperation of the public," Mr Mangion said.
