Published: list of sites where demolition, excavation are banned this summer

Measure takes into account the inconvenience that construction sites cause to surrounding residences and hotels

The Building and Construction Authority and Malta Tourism Authority on Friday published a list of designated tourist zones where no demolition and excavation works can be carried out between June 15 and September 30.

The two authorities said in a statement the ban supports a more enjoyable tourism experience and improved quality of life, with the public encouraged to report any breaches to the BCA on 138 and consult the MTA website for the full list of affected localities and roads.

The measure takes into account the inconvenience that construction sites cause to surrounding residences and hotels.

Enforcement of the ban is regulated by subsidiary legislation 623.08 (third schedule 1c).

The following is a list of localities and streets defining 'Tourist Zones'. This list is being issued by the MTA, which can change/amend it from time to time.

Among the first to react to the news, ADPD chair and St Paul's Bay councillor Sandra Gauci said the measure was only valid on paper.

In reality, the council had already been asked to approve excavation works in Xemxija.

She warned that although the council had turned down the request, the applicant would do what they wanted to do.
