Astra to mark centenary of Puccini’s Turandot with landmark production

The opera tells a story of power, cruelty and transformation

Puccini’s final and most ambitious opera Turandot will be staged in Gozo this year as part of international celebrations marking the centenary of its world première.

The Classique Foundation has announced a landmark production of Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece, to be presented on May 30 at 7.30pm at the Astra Theatre in Victoria. The performance commemorates 100 years since Turandot was first performed on April 25, 1926, an event that marked a defining moment in operatic history.

First staged at La Scala in Milan, Turandot is widely regarded as the last great opera of the grand Italian tradition. It was also Puccini’s final work. The composer died in 1924 before completing the score, leaving the opera unfinished. The task of bringing the work to the stage fell to composer Franco Alfano, whose ending continues to spark debate among scholars and performers. Despite this, Turandot remains one of the most imaginative, emotionally charged and technically complex scores of the 20th century.

Set in a lavish and mythologised vision of ancient China, the opera tells a story of power, cruelty and transformation. At its centre is Princess Turandot, a figure bound by rigid tradition and her own fear of vulnerability. Through a series of deadly riddles, she seeks to maintain control; yet the drama ultimately exposes the tension between public authority and private longing. The opera’s themes of identity, obligation and emotional freedom continue to resonate with modern audiences.

Among the work’s many musical highlights is the celebrated tenor aria Nessun dorma, one of the most recognisable pieces in the entire operatic repertoire. Its soaring melody has become synonymous with operatic grandeur and emotional triumph.

The Gozo production will be conducted by Joseph Debrincat, leading the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. They will be joined by the Coro dell’Opera di Parma, the Classique Opera Chorus and an internationally acclaimed cast of soloists. The staging promises a combination of musical excellence and theatrical spectacle in keeping with the opera’s monumental scale.

The production is being supported by the Ministry for Gozo and Planning, Visit Malta, the NDSF, the Social Causes Fund and other sponsors.

Tickets for Turandot are available from the Astra Theatre website.
