Environment Minister George Pullicino has launched a consultation process in the wake of the call for tenders for the €8.4 million rehabilitation of the waste dumps at Maghtab, Qortin and Wied Fulija.

The minister met the local councils of Naxxar and Gharghur, where he discussed the tender process, the rehabilitation project, and the findings of the Scott Wilson report on the state of the dumps.

The minister also met residents of Maghtab, with whom he discussed the project and the health aspect of the Scott Wilson report's findings. He agreed to meet the residents again, once they had gone through the report.

The ministry said another meeting was held with environmental organisations which promised their support for the project involving the revegetation of the sites.

Other meetings will take place next week with local councils neighbouring the Wied Fulija and Qortin dumps.

A 200-page summary of the Scott Wilson report can be found at www.mrae.gov.mt while the full report is available from WasteServ.

The rehabilitation project is to be financed by the European Union.
