Repair works on the Marsa drainage pumping station are expected to be concluded by today, the Water Services Corporation said.
The WSC said it investigated complaints about a pungent odour emanating from an area close to St Joseph School, in Marsa.
It found that the drainage pumping station did not have an adequate power supply because the damage caused by the storm a month ago to the electricity substation had still not been repaired. Because of this, there were times when the pumps could not keep up with the volume of drainage going through the station and as a result drainage was overflowing.
The WSC said it contacted Enemalta and asked it to consider the pending work to Marsa's electricity system as urgent. Enemalta said the work should be concluded by today.
The Malta Union of Teachers said its officials visited the school following complaints about the smell.
The union officials have requested a meeting with the relevant authorities over the issue.
