Puttinu Cares fundraising marathon raises over €3.3 million

Puttinu investing in new apartments in London for Maltese patients

The public donated more than €3.3 million during a televised fundraiser in aid of Puttinu Cares on Friday.

Puttinu Cares is a charity that offers ongoing support to cancer patients and their families. One of the most important aspects of its work is providing free accommodation in the UK for patients who require treatment abroad.

Since 2008, Puttinu has purchased 20 apartments near the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton.

The fundraiser comes at a time when the charity is investing in a major €25 million project to convert a building in central London into 29 new studio apartments to house Maltese cancer patients and their families.

Works on the new London building, which is located close to Great Ormond Street Hospital, started earlier this year. Once completed, Puttinu’s total number of residences in the UK will be up to 49.

During the fundraising marathon, which kicked off on Friday morning, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that the Government will donate another €50,000 from the Social Causes Fund for the Puttinu Cares project. 

This sum will be added to the additional €50,000 the government donated on Thursday, after the annual Good Friday Puttinu walk was cancelled due to bad weather.
