Qatar Airways to put off resumption of flights to Malta
Flights were meant to resume in June, but may now resume in September
Qatar Airways is set to put off the resumption of flights between Malta and Qatar as the Gulf country reels under the impact of the ongoing war in Iran.
The airline suspended its four-weekly service when the war broke out, but had been expected to resume it in June. Talks are now underway with the Maltese authorities for the resumption to be put off, possibly till September.
Qatar operated flights between Malta and Doha four times weekly, providing connections to destinations in Africa, the Pacific and Australia. Resumption of the flights is not currently seen as financially viable, given that Malta and other countries such as Australia have issued travel advisories urging their citizens to avoid all travel to Qatar.
The airline had also discontinued flights to Malta in 2020 in the wake of Covid 19 because the route was not commercially viable. Services were resumed in July last year after a visit to Doha by Foreign Minister Ian Borg.
