Qormi saw the most traffic accidents in the first three months of the year
There were three road traffic fatalities
Qormi was the locality with the highest number of road traffic accidents from January to March, according to figures released on Tuesday.
The locality saw some 229 accidents, followed by Birkirkara and Marsa, with 213 and 175 cases respectively, the National Statistics Office (NSO) said.
Gozo towns, Ta'Kerċem, Fontana, Għarb and Għasri registered fewer than five road traffic accidents.
Overall, there were 3,495 accidents in the first quarter of the year, up by 0.8 per cent over the same period the year before.
The Northern Harbour district registered the most accidents with 1,217 cases or 34.8 per cent of all accidents.
There were three road traffic fatalities involving two males and one female in the first quarter, while 91 people were left grievously injured, including 59 drivers, seven passengers and 25 others, such as pedestrians and cyclists.
A total of three cyclists were involved in traffic accidents, of whom one sustained grievous injuries, one sustained slight injuries, and another sustained insignificant injuries
Graphic by NSOAs previous data showed, the highest number of road traffic casualties occurred on Thursday, amounting to 52, while the highest number of road traffic accidents occurred on Monday, with 575 cases, or 16% of the total.
Motorists were more likely to have an accident between the hours of noon and 3pm, when there were more than 845 cases, followed by those occurring between 9am and 11.59am, with 809 cases.
