Qrejten Point in Marsaxlokk to get €7 million facelift
Aquatics club to be redeveloped, beach to expand by 15 metres
The area known as Qrejten Point on the outskirts of Marsaxlokk is set to be regenerated.
The €7 million project, announced on Thursday morning, will entail the modernisation of the Marsaxlokk Aquatics Sports Club’s waterpolo pitch, community pool, gym and restaurant, as well as the removal of old buildings and reinforcement of nearby jetties.
An extra €1.2 million will be spent on upgrading Triq Tat-Trunċiera and extending the beach, Għar L-Aħmar Bay, by 15 metres using sand from the area. A berm will be constructed to prevent the sand from being washed away during bad weather.
The latter part of the project is expected to be ready by next summer, while the whole project is slated to be completed in 2028. A tender for the project will be published next week.
Infrastructure Malta CEO Steve Ellul said the project will benefit not just the town’s residents, but the entire southern region, and that the area’s sports organisations played a central role in the project.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Chris Bonett said he wanted infrastructural projects to consist not just of large-scale projects like the Msida flyover, but the regeneration of areas that had been neglected, so that communities could regain the dignity they had lost over the years due to a lack of investment.
“We need to make sure Marsaxlokk’s touristic offering is not sliding backwards,” he added.
Bonett said that sports-related projects were particularly close to his heart.
“It’s often said that children are spending all of their time on their phones, but we need to make sure we are giving them alternatives,” he said.
This is not the first time Għar L-Aħmar Bay has been extended. In 2019, it was replenished with around 2,000 cubic metres of sand.
