Quad bikes are becoming a daily scene on our public roads. It's interesting to note that these bikes hold a clearly displayed sign saying "Always use an approved helmet", "Never use on public roads" and "Never carry passengers". Needless to say, despite the manufacturer's instructions for use of these bikes none of the instructions are followed in Malta.

So I ask the ADT: Why are they licensing these bikes for use on public roads when they are not designed to do so and what type of driving license do owners hold? It's interesting to note that driving licence category A covers different types of motor cycles, category B covers motor vehicles while C, D & E cover commercial vehicles. So where do the quad bikes fit in? What about third party insurance cover?

Are insurers accepting cover for use of these vehicles contrary to manufactures design and instructions? Isn't it like giving a minor permission to drive without a regular licence?

It seems the ADT closed both eyes in the case of these bikes but had decided to withhold importation of electric scooters for kids some two years ago as it had declared that a licence was required! It's a case of Only in Malta!
