I found Peter England's letter on quad bikes (September 23) interesting reading. I have never understood why quad bikes don't qualify as a "bike". Riders should be encouraged to wear crash helmets.
I have, however, to disagree with him regarding his concerns about licensing them. I was in my local motorcycle dealer recently and had the chance to look closely at several of these machines. None of them advised riders not to use these machines on the road. This implies that some quad bikes are street legal while others may not be. I am sure Mr England would also agree that what is not required is a knee jerk reaction similar to the electric scooter fiasco.
Quad bikes offer a realistic option to those who want two wheeled fun on a more stable platform. They have a smaller footprint than even a smart car, and like bikes and scooters in general that means more parking space for other road users and shorter traffic queues.
