In October 1995, the family of the late Ralph Arrigo established a foundation with the University of Malta to help promote in Malta the latest advances in the various fields of medicine through the award of an annual lecture to be known as the Ralph Arrigo Lecture.
The foundation nominated Professor William David George as the Ralph Arrigo Lecturer for this year.
Professor George delivered the lecture, entitled "The Management of Early Breast Cancer" on May 3 in the Conference Hall of the Medical School. The lecturer was introduced by Professor Godfrey Laferla, Head of the University Department of Surgery.
Professor George, a graduate of the University of London, is Head of Department of Surgery, University of Glasgow and honorary consultant surgeon at the Western and Gartnaval Hospitals in Glasgow. In 1995, by royal assent, he was created Regius Professor of Surgery at the same university.
Professor George has a keen interest in breast-related research and has published very extensively in this field. In fact, he leads the breast unit in the Western Infirmary. He was also instrumental in setting up the UK Guidelines on the management of operable breast cancer.
