Sylvester Stallone, more accustomed to saving the world in his larger-than-life roles on the silver screen, has saved the day at Venice after his bodyguard knocked over a greying journalist.

A reporter for Italian television says one of the hulking bodyguards surrounding the American actor gave him a karate chop to the ribs as he tried to get a few words from the "Rambo" star in front of the Des Baines hotel.

The blow sent him sprawling, but Stallone jumped into the fray, helping the stricken journalist to his feet and growling at the bodyguard.

"I reacted, I apologised to him and to Italians for what happened," Stallone, 57, told local media. "At that moment I was thinking, what if that had happened to my father."

Stallone appeared at the 60th Venice Film Festival to promote his new movie, the third instalment of "Spy Kids".
