Raymond Caruana invited for medical screening 39 years after his murder

'Stop hurting our family,' says nephew

The nephew of Raymond Caruana has shared his family’s anger after the former Nationalist activist was sent an invitation to have a medical screening, almost 40 years after his murder.

Caruana was killed on December 5, 1986. He was at the PN club in Gudja when a vehicle driven by unknown assailants passed the club and fired multiple rounds using a submachine gun.

One bullet struck Caruana in the throat, fatally wounding him

The invitation for an abdominal ultrasound scan, received by post, was shared on Facebook by his nephew Stefan Caruana, today a PN councillor in the Gudja council.

“They took Uncle Raymond from us 39 years ago. All of Malta knows, apart from the government, apparently... Now they’ve sent him an invitation to a medical screening,” he wrote, accusing the government of not knowing what it was doing while having no respect and no shame.

“Stop continuing to hurt our family and friends. Rest in peace, Uncle Raymond,” he continued.

Caruana's murder took place amid high political tension, days after clashes when the police and Labour thugs prevented the PN from holding a mass meeting in Żejtun.

Authorities initially accused Pietru Pawl Busuttil and another individual, Nicholas Ellul. However, it was found that Busuttil was framed by corrupt police officers, with a weapon being planted on his property.

The case remains unresolved. His brother Jimmy died last week.
