In the largest re-enactment event ever organised in Malta and Gozo, re-enactors from 17 countries portrayed episodes of Gozo’s history to mark the 220th anniversary of the arrival of the French to the islands under General Napoleon Bonaparte. The Historical Re-enactment Groups of Malta brought this history of Gozo back to life last weekend by recreating landmark events illustrating the French invasion of Gozo, the Islanders’ rebellion, and subsequent liberation, starting with the landing of the French in Gozo at Ramla Bay. The events were centred around Ramla Bay, Victory Square in Xagħra and the streets and squares of Victoria, including the Citadel. Picture shows archpriest Saverio Cassar inciting Gozitans to take up arms against the French at It-Tokk.
