According to Mick Shepherd (March 4), Malta never ceases to amaze him. Well, I was really amazed with what he wrote about the tinting of rear windows of motor vehicles, for he got it all wrong.

It is not true that a medical consultant’s certificate is required if someone requires tinted rear windows on his car.

The regulations are clear but it seems Mr Shepherd is ignorant to what the regulations say.

According to regulation 110A of the Motor Vehicles Regulations, the light transmission on the rear windows may go down to 30 per cent where a vehicle is equipped with left- and right-hand side rear view mirrors and no medical certificate is required.

As is the case in any other country, a medical certificate is required where a person requires, for medical reasons, tinting on the front side window to the right of the driver, which would allow a light transmittance which is less than the standard 70 per cent. In this case, the light transmission may go down to not less than 55 per cent.

Mr Shepherd should have checked his facts well before coming to wrong conclusions.

It is amazing how some people are so quick in putting pen to paper without checking their facts.
