Sliema has been thankfully spared the loss of another of its historic landmarks: The destroyed red phone booth on the traffic island in Sir Adrian Dingli Street has now been replaced by another original in excellent condition. Sliema residents are pleased to note that at last the authorities are gradually starting to appreciate the island's more recent heritage.
Just for the record, the red phone booth at the Three Trees junction is known as a Jubilee kiosk or K6 because the model was designed to celebrate King George V's Silver Jubilee in 1935. The architect responsible for the design was Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who is also famous for his work on Liverpool cathedral.
These phone boxes were painted a distinctive red to ensure that they were visible at a great distance and thousands were installed across the British Empire.
We would therefore like to thank Payzone Cooperative and the Sliema local council for giving our antique street furniture some of the appreciation it deserves.
