Red plate vehicles to be allowed on roads earlier on Fridays

Transport Minister says the change will allow owners more flexibility to carry out repairs on their vehicles

Owners of vehicles with red licence plates will now be allowed to take them out from Friday morning instead of Friday evening, the Transport Minister announced.

Chris Bonett revealed the update on Facebook on Friday, where he said the idea had been proposed to him by a man, Joseph, who raised the issue with the minister last month.

Joseph explained that many mechanics are closed on Saturdays, making it a challenge for red plate vehicle owners to carry out any necessary maintenance or repairs. He said allowing vehicles on the road from Friday at 7am, rather than 6pm, would make it easier for them to access such services.

Bonett said the change will be introduced next week.

Previously, those cars or motorcycles which carry a licence plate with red characters were allowed on the roads exclusively on Friday evenings, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The same vehicles have to be parked in a garage during the week.
