Renowned orthopaedic surgeon to contest PN ticket
Ray Gatt, who resides in Żejtun, is expected to contest two southern districts
A prominent orthopaedic consultant is set to be fielded as one of the Nationalist Party’s “star” candidates in the next general election.
Ray Gatt has served as a consultant in orthopaedics and trauma surgery since 2002 and headed the unit between 2010 and 2015.
His clinical work focuses largely on revision arthroplasty, as well as primary joint replacement and orthopaedic trauma surgery.
He also serves as president of Doctors for Road Safety and is a member of Catholic Voices Malta.
Gatt, who resides in Żejtun, will be making his first foray into politics and is expected to contest two southern districts.
Party insiders described Gatt as one of the PN’s “star” candidates
Sources within the PN said he is among a group of up to 10 new candidates set to be approved in the coming week, as the party intensifies preparations for the next general election.
Party insiders described Gatt as one of the PN’s “star” candidates, with leader Alex Borg keen to present a balanced team combining experience with younger faces.
“We are looking for quality and competence, not quantity,” a source said, adding that internal data suggests voters are seeking candidates with ministerial potential.
“Ray Gatt is a technocrat who could bring significant change to the health sector,” the source added.
Political observers said both the Nationalist Party and the Labour Party are facing challenges in attracting new high-profile candidates ahead of the election.
Speculation continues to mount that the general election could be held by late May or early June, more than nine months ahead of schedule.
