Restoration works on Mtarfa care home enter next phase

Dar il-Ġmiel is being restored and upgraded while residents still use it

Restoration work on a care home for the elderly in Mtarfa has entered its next stage, the government said on Saturday.

Works on the upper floors of Dar il-Ġmiel are nearing completion, with balconies restored, gypsum walls erected and other structural alterations carried out.

The focus will now shift to the property’s ground floor, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Active Ageing said.

Junior Minister Malcolm Paul Agius Galea toured the site, which is still serving as a care home while restoration works are being carried out. The home is also still providing services like a Dementia Day Centre.

Agius Galea said works, which are being carried out in large part by workers from the Active Ageing and Community Care Department (AACC), are being done meticulously to ensure residents are not disturbed.

AACC worker Pawlu Muscat explained that works are now focused on installing new electrical, plumbing and drainage systems as well as installing new furniture in residents’ rooms.
