A reverse osmosis plant is to be built in Gozo, making the sister island self-sufficient in the provision of water.

The plant will be installed at Ħondoq, on the site of the former sea-water distillation plant, built in the 1960s.

Water and Energy Minister Joe Mizzi visited the site with Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana.

Mr Mizzi said some 100 million euros were being invested in Gozo by the Water Services Corporation on projects which also included systems to protect water sources and improve distribution.

The new RO plant will, if necessary, supply water to Malta. At present some water is pumped from the Ċirkewwa RO plant to Gozo.

The new plant will supply 9,000 cubic metres of water every day.
