Rizzo seizes lead in Division One

Round four of the national squash league came to an end last month with over 45 players competing in the open league as interest in this sport continues to increase.

Notwithstanding the lack of public courts, the national league, run by MaltaSquash, is proving to be more popular than ever as players of all levels compete against each other and try to work their way up to the top divisions.

The national league now has a total of eight divisions and sees players ranging in age from 12 to 65 taking part.

In Division One, Steve Rizzo knocked James Bonello Ghio off the top spot which he had held for the last three rounds.

Bonello Ghio lost a crucial game to Theresa Camilleri and this was enough to give Rizzo the chance to overtake him.

Bonello Ghio is now second in the table with just one point standing between the two top seeds.

Carl Camilleri dominated the second division, winning all his games 4-1 or better. His impressive reach and speed were key factors in his game as he progressively wore his opponents down.

Peter Wirth, also in great form, will join him in the first division. Wirth's training for the half marathon paid dividends, particularly in his hard-earned 3-2 match win Dennis Attard Bondi.

Meanwhile relative newcomer, Malcolm Crabbe held his own and kept his division two status.

The third to seventh divisions produced close-fought matches with players such as Malcolm Naudi and Matthew Borg impressing as they swiftly moved up the ranks.
