I refer to the letter Gharghur Road Blocked (August 21) by Franco Grima who was very generous in highlighting a clear case of lateral thinking using two brain cells for the traffic management put into place for Gharghur Road and the Birguma Bypass.
The new Birguma Bypass (Triq Margaret A. Murray) has opened from the Telgha t'Alla u Ommu to the top of L-Iklin. This road has cut through a main access road servicing Gharghur through Gharghur Road. Apart from the inconvenience for the Naxxar residents of the immediate road (Gharghur Road), a significant dangerous situation has been created.
Pedestrians (mostly children) walking from Gharghur Road to the school, church and shops are risking their lives trying to cross the new road, which is being used as a racing track.
Has anybody thought of the consequences and the impact of this fiasco? Who will be accountable if, God forbid, a tragedy happens?
What I find truly amazing is that nobody from the Roads Department has bothered to consult the residents or at least the Naxxar local council, as I was informed.
This is the kind of arrogance which decent folk who pay their taxes get really annoyed about.
As was stated in Mr Grima's letter, Gharghur Road should be reopened immediately and a safe pedestrian crossing installed at the junction with Margaret A. Murray Street.
