Road standards

On Tuesday, July 11, Mellieha and Gozo were cut off from the rest of Malta for several hours due to a simple traffic accident in Xemxija.

Traffic chaos ensued with tailbacks of traffic going back from Xemxija, through Mistra and as far as Mellieha itself and also the other way towards St Paul's Bay.

The Mellieha to Manikata road is at present closed to traffic due to roadworks and the tiny Mizieb short cut was unable to cope with the extraordinary volume of frustrated motorists trying their luck, and especially when this lane also became impassable when it experienced a small traffic accident of its own.

A friend of mine who left his house in Gozo at 4.15 p.m. eventually arrived at a function in Salina at 8 p.m.

Surely we deserve better, especially in the 21st century, when we boast that we form part of the First World.
