Jason Robinson was confirmed as England captain for the opening Six Nations game against Wales as coach Andy Robinson gathered together his injury-ravaged squad for a three-day training session.

With Jonny Wilkinson ruled out for at least the first three games and possibly the entire championship with a knee injury, Sale full-back Robinson continues in the role he took up for the three November internationals.

"Jason has the respect of the whole squad and proved himself to be a true leader last November on and off the pitch," Robinson said.

"We are fortunate to be able to call upon him to step up to the captaincy role while Jonny recovers from his knee injury."

England begin their campaign in Cardiff on February 5 and play France at Twickenham eight days later.

The squad had their first training session with English rugby league champions Leeds Rhinos on Monday but the main talking point must have been the run of injuries that have hampered Robinson's preparations.

With his midfield options already limited by injuries to World Cup-winning centre duo Mike Tindall and Will Greenwood, the coach was given another headache at the weekend when Wasps centre Stuart Abbott broke his leg.

"This must be very upsetting for Stuart," Andy Robinson said.

"To suffer another injury, which will deny him the opportunity to be considered for England selection once more, is very bad luck. He is a talented player who could have played a part in England's Six Nations."

Gloucester number eight Adam Balding and Leicester flyhalf Andy Goode were added to the squad for their three-day session in Leeds.
