Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna is holding its annual Roman festival at the display arena in Fort Rinella, Kalkara tomorrow and on Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
The event is being organised together with the Maltese Roman re-enactment Group Legio X Fretensis and is supported by the Bank of Valletta.
The festival will include a combination of talks, hands-on displays, static exhibitions of weapons and equipment, food and wine tasting and large-scale re-enactments depicting different forms of Roman warfare in the field.
The latter will include foot and mounted troops and for the first-time ever these will be assisted by live-firing catapult. A museum-quality period chariot will also be shown.
The entrance fee for non-FWA members adults is €10 but free for all accompanied children. FWA members enter free.
The full-scale military display starts at 2pm each day.
Programme
• 10am opening – Roman life lecture
• 11am - Swords through the ages display
• noon - Roman food and wine tasting
• 2pm – Roman large formation tactics
• 3pm – Artillery drill (firing of a Roman Catapult)
• 3.30pm - Roman military camp life
• 4pm – Cavalry display including the use of a Biga (two horse chariot)
