Illegally-built rooms and a small garden were demolished by government workers yesterday afternoon to make way for the ongoing restoration works on the bastions surrounding Valletta.
Hidden behind a grey corrugated iron gate, just off Great Siege Road, Floriana, the structure was used for recreational purposes for several years, so much so that it was fitted with electricity and water.
A spokesman for the Land Department said the owner was first served with an enforcement notice to remove the rooms but when he failed to comply, they were demolished.
Government employees entered into the rooms yesterday morning. There, they found a menagerie of miscellaneous goods, including musical instruments and vehicle parts.
In the afternoon, the structures were demolished. The debris was cleared away shortly after.
This was the first enforcement action this year.
