A Wayne Rooney goal after 54 seconds gave Manchester United a 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford yesterday as the champions continued their relentless pursuit of leaders Liverpool.
The victory lifted United up to second, two points behind the Anfield side with a game in hand.
United, on 42 points, will go top if they beat Bolton Wanderers on Saturday as Liverpool, who have 44, do not play until they host Everton in the Merseyside derby on Monday.
Rooney's first-minute strike came after a good run and cross from Cristiano Ronaldo although that was virtually Rooney's last contribution as he limped off with what looked like a hamstring injury a few minutes later.
He was replaced by Carlos Tevez who had a great chance to double United's lead soon after coming on but lost control of the ball after rounding Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland.
