World champion Valentino Rossi can celebrate Turkey's MotoGP debut tomorrow by equalling Australian Mick Doohan's 1997 record haul of 12 wins in a season.

The Italian secured his fifth successive title in Malaysia last month and romped to his 11th victory of the year in Australia last weekend.

A win in Istanbul would leave him one more race, the Valencia season-ender, to break Doohan's record.

The circuit is one of just two on the current calendar which has not featured a Rossi victory in one of the three grands prix classes. California's Laguna Seca, which returned this year after a 10-year absence, is the other.
