Runners raise funds with 20km birthday run in memory of Rebecca Zammit Lupi
A friend's initiative has become an annual event
Around 35 runners and supporters gathered in Sliema on Sunday morning to mark what would have been Rebecca Zammit Lupi’s 20th birthday, with a 20km memorial run, now in its fifth year.
The heartfelt event, organised by Rebecca’s childhood friend Tommy Wallbank, saw participants complete a 20km route—one kilometre for each year of her life—while raising funds and awareness in support of mental health.
“We ran 20km since Rebecca would have been 20 today,” Wallbank told Times of Malta. “It’s become a tradition now. Every year I run one kilometre for her age—so next year, I’ll be running 21.
”Rebecca, affectionately known as Becs, died aged 15 on January 3, 2021, following a battle with cancer.

Wallbank’s family, along with Rebecca’s parents—Darrin Zammit Lupi and Marisa Ford—formed part of the support team, cheering on runners and providing water throughout the morning.
Wallbank began running in 2021 to honour his friend’s memory, initially pledging to run one kilometre for every €5 donated to Puttinu Cares.
What started as a modest goal of €500 and 100km quickly snowballed, with support pouring in. He ended up completing a full 1,000km and raising over €11,000.

This year’s run has so far raised around €700, with donations still open. Funds will go to the Karl Vella Foundation and Crisis Resolution Malta, two organisations focused on mental health support.
Donations can be made via Revolut to 77300305.
Wallbank expressed gratitude to all who took part, whether by running, supporting, or volunteering.
“It means a lot to me—it’s my way of keeping Rebecca’s spirit alive,” he said. “Each year, the run brings people together, sparks conversations, and does good in her name. That’s what drives me to keep going. As long as I’m physically able, I’ll continue.”
