The Malta Sailing Federation has renamed the Helmsman of the Year Award, now known as the Sailor of the Year Award.

MSF vice-president Paul Ellul explained that the former name of the award implied that it was only open to sailors who were in a helming position.

This was rather unfair for other members of the crew whose position on a sailing craft, such as navigators, sail trimmers, bow persons, and tacticians, never really had a chance to become eligible.

Mr Ellul said that now every club or association affiliated to the MSF may nominate a senior and junior candidate based on their achievements of that year.

The awards will be presented at the Ryal Malta Yacht Club on Saturday at 7.30 p.m.
