Two French sailors serving on the Jeanne d`Arc were yesterday given a two-year jail term suspended for four years for damaging several cars parked in St Julian`s and injuring two people, including a police sergeant.

Domenique Austruy, 20, and Giani Vitali, 19, pleaded guilty to causing some Lm6,000 damage to the cars and slightly injuring John Fitz and PS J. Pace in Elia Zammit Street on Sunday at about midnight.

Before passing judgment, Magistrate Joseph Cassar heard that the French embassy had offered to make good for the damage.

The sailors will be deported.
