Chile striker Marcelo Salas has admitted that he enjoyed silencing the critics when he broke the country's international scoring record in the 3-1 win over Bolivia last weekend.
The former Juventus and Lazio striker, who has been plagued by injury in the last three years, moved on to 35 goals, one ahead of his retired former striking partner Ivan Zamorano, after his 67th minute strike.
It was his first international goal since he scored against the same opponents four years ago.
"This is a special day," he said.
"I'm happy because I've reached an important target in my career. I'm proud.
"Without getting resentful or wanting to disrespect anyone, last week they were telling me that I should retire and now I'm going to enjoy this a lot."
The 30-year-old, who last week scored a hat-trick for his Argentine club River Plate in a Libertadores Cup match, was substituted to a rousing reception in the 71st minute.
The only low point was a yellow card which means he will miss tomorrow's game at home to Venezuela due to suspension.
