A preliminary survey of shops in popular retailing areas like Sliema, Mosta and Valletta showed that on the whole sales this Christmas were as good as last year or worse, the Association of General Retailers and Traders said.

When asked to compare this year with last year, six per cent said that sales were better, 49 per cent said they were the same, and the rest said they were worse. Those surveyed said they believed sales were affected by competition (37 per cent), and by a lack of disposable income (38 per cent).

The GRTU will be carrying out another survey after the festive season.
