The first round of the Doubles League Division One recently came to an end with the direct encounter between the two leading pairs - champions Kenneth Vella/Rodney Abela (Pawla Wolves Schtag) and brothers Robert and Stefan Salomone (Birkirkara Medairco).
As evidenced by the final 15/4 15/7 scoreline, the game was dominated by the Birkirkara duo who kept control of proceedings from start to finish. The Wolves pair had no answer to the enthusiasm and determination of their opponents to make the match their own.
The Salomone brothers combined their talents well and were constantly on the attack, reaping rich dividends from their aggressive moves. Vella and Abela took time to settle down, committing too many errors which ultimately proved costly.
The win not only gave the unbeaten Salomone pair a three-point advantage at the top of the table but also secured them an important psychological advantage that will enable them to play more confidently throughout the second round.
Maximum points
The Division Two league has so far been dominated by Edmund Abela and Catherine Dimech (Pawla Wolves Schtag).
They are still unbeaten in six matches and have opened up an almost unassailable lead at the top of the standings.
Abela and Dimech lead the standings with a maximum 18 points.
Patrick Cassar/Alfred Polidano and Martin Camilleri/ Austin Compagno are a distant second, on eight points each.
They are followed by Rachel Attard/Jacqueline De Giovanni and Albert Bezzina/Adrian Chetcuti, with six.
Chris Spiteri/George Camilleri still have to win their first points.
The competitive activities of the Badminton Association continue on Sunday with more fixtures from the Singles League.
